บทคัดย่อ/Abstract | This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of bullying in primary schools of Pattani province, southern Thailand, and to identify risk factors for bullying. A crosssectional survey was conducted among 1,440 students using a questionnaire adopted from Valerie E. Besag, the educational psychologist. All participants were interviewed between November 1, 2005 and March 31, 2006, during class time. Questions on bullying referred to behaviour during the previous year. Pearson?s chi-squared test was used to assess the associations between the outcome and various determinants. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for bullying. Two different techniques were used for identifying bullying. The overall prevalence of bullying was found to be 32.9% for the first technique and 20.9% for the second technique. Both techniques found that witnessing parental physical abuse was the most strongly associated determinant for bullying. Students having parental physical abuse experiences were more likely to bully others than were those who had never witnessed parental physical abuse (for first technique, OR 4.50; 95% CI 3.40-5.89, and for second technique, OR 7.60; 95% CI 5.60-10.31). Preference for action cartoons was also a major risk factor for bullying others. Students who preferred action cartoons tended to bully more than did students who preferred comedy and mystery cartoons (for first technique, OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.32-2.18, and for second technique 2.87, 95% CI 1.91-4.30). The results from this study indicate that students who had experience of parental violence and preferred action cartoons were more likely to be bullies at school. This study also provides some directions for attempting to reduce the problems of bullying. It might be useful if teachers and other authorities assist parents to reduce their own level of family violence and closely control cartoon program viewing as ways to help their children. |
